I ruled it out as the problem at the time since I had it retarted and also was running a new needle bearings style timing advance unit, but apparently I was wrong.

Just make sure the coils you are trying to use are for an electronic ignition. That could be the problem if you replaced your points with the dyna S and are trying to use the same coils.
